I make this very tasty onion chutney with idli/dosas. The recipe calls for small onions or shallots but I have made this several times with normal onions and it tastes good too. it is pretty easy to prepare with the only effort of chopping onions.

Here is the recipe..

Serves 2

Ingredients :
Small onion(shallots) - 1 cup chopped
Whole red chilli - 1 or as per spice or red chilli powder as per taste
Tamarind extract - 2 Teaspoons
Salt as per taste
Water as required
Oil - 2 Teaspoons + 1 Teaspoon
Mustard seeds - 1/2 Teaspoon
Urad daal - 1 Teaspoon
Curry leaves - 6-8

Method :
1. In a pan heat 1 Teaspoon oil. Add the chopped onions and whole red chilli if using and fry till a few golden spits appear on the onion.
2. Once the onion cools down, blend it to a smooth paste with tamarind,  salt and water as required. Add red chilli powder while blending if not using whole red chilli.
3. In a pan heat 2 Teaspoons oil. Add the mustard seeds, urad daal and curry leaves and temper.
4. Add the onion paste to this with 2 Tablespoons water. Switch off flame and mix well.

Enjoy onion chutney.
