I was going through a food blog this afternoon when I came across the recipe for Chinese Chews. I decided to give it a try as I had all ingredients available. I read through the entire recipe, measured and kept aside all ingredients. While I was preparing the recipe I misread one of the instructions and blended the walnuts and dates whereas only the egg needed to be beated. The end result tastes amazing and is still quite chewy. The blended taste of dates and walnuts is so good. I will try once again to make this by not blending the dates and walnuts. It is a very sweet and tasty dessert and snack.. I call what I prepared today Not so chewy Chinese Chews. If you follow the recipe as is with not blending the dates and walnuts then it would be the original Chinese Chews..

Here is the recipe..

Makes 10 squares

Ingredients :
All Purpose Flour - 1/4 cup + extra for dusting
Sugar - 1/3 cup
Dates - 1/3 cup chopped
Walnuts - 1/3 cup chopped
Egg - 1
Baking Powder - 1/3 Teaspoon
Salt a small pinch
Oil or butter for greasing
Icing sugar as required

Method :
1. Preheat oven to 150C
2. Grease and generously dust with flour a baking pan. I used a loaf pan. 
3. In a mixing bowl add the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder and mix well.
4. In another bowl beat the egg till it turns fluffy.
5. To the egg add the chopped dates and chopped walnuts and mix well (This is where I went wrong. I blended the walnuts and dates along with the egg)

6. Add the egg, dates and walnuts to the dry ingredients and mix well till they are well combined.

7. The batter will be very sticky.
8. Spread the batter in the greased pan as thin as possible. I had to wet a spoon and also my fingers to spread the batter.

9. Bake for about 30 minutes till the top turns golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.
10. Let it cool down on a cooling rack completely before cutting into squares.
11. Dust with Icing sugar.
